Zamboanga City, May 13 (PIA) -As the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) implementation in the city will take its last effect on May 14, the Local Inter-Agency Task Force (LIATF) on COVID-19 and different stakeholders here are bent on appealing its extension as COVID-19 cases continue to surge, admitted by Mayor Beng Climaco during her virtual presser recently.

"Through the concurrent LIATF chief implementer, the city wants to extend MECQ to give our health workers the needed breathing space and to lessen the movement of the people outside their residences as COVID-19 cases continue to upswing," she explained.

Even with the current MECQ status, some people continue to disregard the stringent quarantine guidelines and protocols.

However, the Mayor is confident that the city could attain the cooperation of the majority as police, militaries, barangay officials and other multipliers remain committed on their tasks to ensure that the public complies with the health protocols and bears with the Sunday lockdown.

"The implementation of MECQ starting last Saturday has been encouraging the people to cooperate especially during the Sunday lockdown for it is the city's time to do the disinfection among public places," she stressed.

On May 11, the city has already recorded 392 MECQ violators, who were caught with no quarantine or any valid ID's to present at the quarantine checkpoints, non-observance of health protocols and motorcycle riding violations, among others.

The city is also requesting DOH-9 for additional medicines for symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID-19 patients that has now reached more than 2,000; even reaching out to the US government and the different cities of China for possible help to address the COVID-19 here.

Among other regions, Zamboanga Peninsula is third with the least COVID-19 vaccine allocation.

"All that we are experiencing now is just temporary that's why we are doing all the mitigations such as to place the city under MECQ for us to bring back the old good situation we used to," the mayor concluded. (EDT/JRA/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
