CALOOCAN CITY, March 1 (PIA) -- President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Sunday described as a "global public good" China's efforts to freely distribute its own brand of COVID-19 vaccine to many countries, most especially the underpriviledge ones, in its bid to help curb the global health pandemic.

The President made the statement during a press conference held at the Villamor Airbase in Pasay City, after leading his Cabinet officials in welcoming the arrival, by plane, of the much-awaited 600,000 doses of Sinovac-made CoronaVac vaccine donated by China.

"I said it before and I will say it again: COVID-19 vaccines should be treated as a global public good and made available to all, rich and poor alike," Duterte said, as he also lauded the "gesture of friendship and solidarity - the hallmark of Philippines-China partnership," and the efforts made by China, particularly by its President Xi Jinping.

"China has a good spirit. The people are kind and the government is very... it has great respect and love for mankind," he said.

The Chief Executive also maintained that the Chinese Government did not "ask for anything" in return for its donation of the 600,000 jab doses.

"China never asked for anything. China has been giving us everything but never asked anything from us actually," he said.

The President said a global pandemic requires a world effort to end it.

"At the end of the day, as repeatedly said, no one is safe until everyone is safe," Duterte pointed out.

"Countries must therefore continue working together and do everything humanly possible to ensure a good outcome for every person," he added.

"No nation - no people - should be left to suffer the ravages of this pandemic for whatever reason," he further said. (PIA NCR)
