Ferris wheel Rio Star, Latin America's biggest, measuring 88 meters high was inaugurated Friday (Dec. 6) in Rio de Janeiro's port area. Its full revolution will take 18 minutes. The public will be carried in gondolas with a capacity of up to eight passengers each.
The ferris wheel offers a privileged view of Christ the Redeemer, the Sugar loaf, and the Guanabara Bay, the city's main landmarks.
The project was conceived in a tender offer published by the city for the construction of a theme park in the area, near the Rio de Janeiro Aquarium. Fabio Bordin, the executive director of FW Investimentos, the holding administering Rio Star, said the works started in December last year, adding that the biggest challenge was to "tropicalize" the wheel, which was entirely built and commissioned in China.
"We went to China with our engineers and specified how the structure should be designed, so that it could come to Brazil prepared for the the issue of sea spray and the type of steel. Everything was done beforehand," the executive said.
Rio Star is expected to generate 60 direct jobs and over 60 indirect jobs, and some of these positions are reserved for locals, especially from the neighboring favela of Morro da Providência.
